Men’s Tennis Falls to San Diego in WCC Opener

SAN DIEGO — Gonzaga men’s tennis pushed San Diego, but ultimately fell 5-2 on Sunday in the teams’ West Coast Conference opener in San Diego, Calif.
GU won one doubles match and two singles matches on the day, but San Diego took home the doubles point and the top four singles courts.
The Zags won the first doubles match to finish with Kyle Everly and Vincent Rettke taking a 6-1 win on No. 2, but the Toreros earned a 6-4 win on No. 3 and followed with a 6-3 win on No. 1 to secure the 1-0 lead.
In singles, the Toreros clinched the match taking the top four courts before the Zags could get on the board with wins on No. 5 and No. 6. GU’s Emilio Moreno earned the win on NO. 5 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory. On No. 6, Everly collected his second victory of the day with a 3-6, 7-6(5), 1-0 (7) win.
The Zags will be in California for the week, taking on UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. GU plays UC Irvine on Thursday at 10 a.m. and Yale on Saturday at a time to be announced, both in Irvine, Calif.
