MTEN Faces Stiff Competition at ITA Northwest Regional
Oct. 17, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash.--After a weekend off, the Gonzaga men's tennis team is back in action at the ITA Northwest Regionals in Stockton, Calif., this weekend.
All eight Zags will compete for the regional title, which will be decided Oct. 19-23 on the campus of the University of the Pacific. Additionally, GU will have four doubles pairs play for the doubles bracket championship.
Last season, two individuals and two pairs reached the Round of 32 in both brackets at the regional championship held in Berkeley. In singles play, both Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Vincent Rettke picked up a pair of main bracket victories before moving to consolation play, and they each also claimed a doubles victory with playing partners Ronzai Saurombe and Kyle Everly, respectively. At least one Bulldog has reached the Round of 32 in singles play since 2010, and two have advanced that far in the last two years.
Gonzaga's deepest run in the tournament came in 2014 when Zag great Alvaro Nazal reached the semifinals. He opened play that year with five straight singles wins - four over Pac-12 foes - before falling one match shy of the finale.
This season, O'Sullivan leads Gonzaga with a 7-2 singles record after reaching the semifinals of the Dar Walter Fall Classic Oct. 6-8. Rettke is second at 6-2, and Emilio Moreno also has six wins after claiming the consolation singles title at Boise State. In doubles play, O'Sullivan and partner Sam Feit have a .500 record at 2-2.
Gonzaga will begin the ITA Northwest Regionals on Thursday, Oct. 19. When released, draws and start times for the tournament may be found on www.GoZags.com.
