MTEN to End Season by Hosting Bulldog Classic
Oct. 26, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash.--The Gonzaga men's tennis team will wrap up the fall tournament season with a bit of home cooking this weekend as they host their annual Bulldog Classic Friday, Oct. 27-Sunday, Oct. 29 inside The Stevens Center.
The tournament features two singles brackets and one doubles bracket. There are no seeds, but Zags Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Sam Feit open the A Singles flight with byes, and the pair are off the first round of doubles play as well. In all, eight regional teams are making the trip to Spokane: Boise State, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana, Montana State, Portland, Portland State, and Seattle U.
The Bulldogs enter the weekend with momentum coming off last week's ITA Northwest Regionals. O'Sullivan and Feit made the deepest run by a Gonzaga duo in the regional championship's main doubles bracket, reaching the semifinal round. Feit also reached the Round of 16 in singles play, and both O'Sullivan and Emilio Moreno joined the sophomore in the Round of 32. On the fall, O'Sullivan leads the team with a 9-3 single record, and Vincent Rettke is one win off that pace at 8-3. Feit and O'Sullivan are 6-3 after their deep doubles run.
Gonzaga has historically done well at their own tournament. In the Bulldog Classic's first year, 2014, the Zags swept both singles flights and the doubles main bracket. Hayden Smith reached the A Singles semifinal in 2015, and Moreno won the B Singles flight last year for his first career bracket victory.
The 2017 Bulldog Classic will also mark the home debut for two Zags: Bryan Husin and Matthew Perkins. Husin is a sophomore transfer who spent last season at Pacific, and Perkins is a freshman from West Linn, Ore.
Play begins at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 27 with two rounds of doubles matches. Singles contests are slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.
