Wendle Named Zag of the Month
Jan. 24, 2017
Graham Wendle, a member of the men’s cross country and track team, has been recognized as the December Zag of the Month. SAAC recently met to begin the spring semester, voting on Wendle as the Zag having gone above and beyond in the final month of the fall semester.
Wendle began his career at Gonzaga in the fall of 2014 after winning the Washington State Championship in the 4 x 400-meter relay for Bellevue High School. Four years later, he continues to succeed on the track, pushing himself and his teammates to improve as student-athletes.
At Gonzaga, Wendle ran a 9:30.30 for the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Oregon Relays, which placed him ninth on the Gonzaga all-time list. He also was a part of Gonzaga’s Indoor Distance Medley Relay that broke the school record. Some of his personal bests at Gonzaga include 3:57.09 in the 1,500 meters and 15:21.54 in the 5,000 meters. His fellow Zags describe him as, “a strong leader who is constantly uplifting and encouraging his teammates.”
An accounting major, Wendle holds a solid 3.36 GPA. He is also an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was a key part of the Student-Athlete Leadership Institute his sophomore year. As a young leader, he helped to develop a program aimed at increasing inter-departmental cohesiveness through the New Athlete Orientation Course.
Wendle has also made significant contributions in the community and, even more notably, prompted his team do the same. In Wendle’s years as a Zag, the men’s cross country team has significantly increased time spent in the community, one year serving 85 hours and the next 195. This past fall, he and the team volunteered at the JDRF Walk, the Catholic Charities Food Drive and Leaf Raking Blitz. In years past, Wendle has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, the Book Drive, and the Humane Society.
A student-athlete selected as Zag-of-the-Month exhibits effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, campus involvement, community service, dedication to team, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future GU students and student-athletes. Each month GU’s S.A.A.C. nominates and selects one of their peers for the award.
