Jenny Albrecht Named Zag of the Month
Feb. 13, 2017
January’s Zag of the Month has been awarded to Jenny Albrecht, a member of the women's cross country and track & field team. Albrecht began her time at Gonzaga in the fall of 2014 after a strong high school career. She wrapped up her years at Eastmont High with a second-place finish in the 800-meter race at the district championships. She had a time of 2:21.02. As a Zag, Albrecht continues to stand out, oftentimes going above and beyond those around her.
Athletically, Albrecht’s growth mindset has helped her to find success. At the West Coast Invitational, she raced to a personal best in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:49.24, placing sixth. She had another personal best at the WSU Cougar Indoor Invitational, this time for the 800-meter race with a time of 2:29.24. While Albrecht pushes herself on the track, she also manages to be an active member of the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) in addition to being an employed peer tutor for Gonzaga’s athletic department. A fellow teammate describes Albrecht as, "always positive and optimistic. She works so hard and never complains. She is an overall team player and is always willing to do whatever it takes for her team to succeed.”
Albrecht’s passion for athletics has also played a part in her academics as she currently majors in physical education with a fitness specialist concentration. Not only does she hold an impressive 3.89 GPA, she has worked diligently at her coursework, allowing her to soon graduate a semester early. Her work ethic and dedication to academics has also earned her a spot on the President’s List for all but one semester at Gonzaga, at which time she was on the Dean’s list.
When she’s not running or working toward her degree, Albrecht actively participates in volunteer work. Over her years at Gonzaga, she has helped at multiple outreach events including the Catholic Charities Collections, Leaf Raking Blitz, Trunk-or-Treat, House of Charity, the Humane Society, the JDRF Walk, and various elementary school visits.
A student-athlete selected as Zag of the Month exhibits effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, campus involvement, community service, dedication to team, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future GU students and student-athletes. Each month GU’s S.A.A.C. nominates and selects one of their peers for the award.
