Williams-Goss named Zag of the Month
March 29, 2017
February’s Zag of the Month has been awarded to Nigel Williams-Goss, a redshirt junior on the men’s basketball team. Williams-Goss began his time at Gonzaga in the fall of 2015 after transferring from the University of Washington. He had a strong redshirt year, using it to develop and grow both as a student and as an athlete. As a Zag, Williams-Goss continues to stand out, oftentimes going above and beyond those around him.
Athletically, Williams-Goss has dominated at the conference and national level. As one of two team captains, he has been recognized in the running for many prestigious awards including being a national finalist for the Naismith Award, Oscar Robertson Award, Bob Cousy Award and Wooden Award. For the West Coast Conference, he won WCC Player of the Year as well as Newcomer of the Year. Williams-Goss is now a First Team Academic All-American, showing his intense commitment to academics as well as athletics. A fellow student-athlete described Williams-Goss as representing Gonzaga athletically, academically and in the community since he arrived on campus. “He has been a great voice in the media this year, showing his love and appreciation for our school and athletic programs.”
Williams-Goss’ academic endeavors mirror his athletics. He is currently working toward his Master’s in Organizational Leadership after graduating in 3.5 years with a B.A. in Psychology. He holds an impressive 3.84 GPA. Committed to being the ultimate student-athlete, Williams-Goss has been recognized on the President’s and Dean’s list honors each semester since he has been at Gonzaga.
When he’s not playing basketball or working towards his degree, Williams-Goss actively participates in volunteer work. Over his years at Gonzaga, he has helped at multiple community outreach events including the Gonzaga Logan Block Party, N7 Basketball Clinic, Soap Box Derby, Spokane AAU, and the VA Medical Center. He has also visited various local elementary schools and hospitals.
A student-athlete selected as Zag-of-the-Month exhibits effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, campus involvement, community service, dedication to team, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future GU students and student-athletes. Each month GU’s S.A.A.C. nominates and selects one of their peers for the award.
