Garrett Wilson Named October Zag Of The Month
Dec. 1, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. - A native of Eagle, Colorado and a junior on the men’s soccer team, Garrett Wilson is October’s Zag of the Month.
“He is the definition of a servant leader, someone who leads by example, and is exactly what you look for in a teammate,” says a peer of Wilson’s. “He is one of the most genuine people at Gonzaga, he is always willing to help others before himself and deserves to be recognized for what he does for his team.”
As a business administration major, Wilson holds a 3.55 GPA while pursuing concentrations in finance and management information systems. Recognized for his work ethic in the classroom, Wilson was on the Dean’s List for the Spring 2017 semester and the President’s List in the Spring of 2016. The West Coast Conference also took notice, recognizing Wilson on the WCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll for his 2015-16 campaign.
Athletically, Wilson was named to the 2015 WCC All-Freshman Team, starting 9 of 15 games played. He contributed to a defense who tied for first in the West Coast Conference with only 21 goals allowed on the year. The following year, Wilson assisted a defensive line who averaged 1.67 goals per game and allowed just one goal or less, on 10 different occasions.
An active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Wilson is a vocal and engaged representative for the Men’s Soccer team. He is a key contributor to committee decision making and involvement in student-athlete feedback to Gonzaga, the West Coast Conference and the NCAA.
In his sophomore year, Wilson looked to extend his leadership involvement in the Gonzaga community, joining the Student-Athlete Leadership Institute. He continued to work on developing leadership and communication skills while working with fellow Zags on how best to improve the student-athlete experience. The Leadership class of 2016-17, including Wilson, worked together to modify a Zags community building event, meant to bring student-athletes from all varsity athletic teams together, resulting in a mixed-sport dodgeball tournament. With over 200 Zags in attendance, the event proved to be a huge success. Wilson stepped-up this fall to act as a mentor to freshmen Zags, taking on the role as a “ZagOlympics” captain in the New Athlete Orientation course and led his team to a championship.
Wilson’s community outreach involvement is equally as impressive as his academics and athletic accomplishments. He has volunteered numerous times as a Zag, including events such as the Gonzaga Logan Block Party, the Muscular Dystrophy Association walk, Habitat for Humanity, Leaf Raking Blitz, Spring Yard Clean Up, and Trunk or Treat.
A true Zag and leader within the Gonzaga community, Garrett Wilson is October’s Zag of the Month.
