Volleyball’s Kuehn Nominated as Zag of the Month
Dec. 19, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. - An opposite hitter and setter from Eugene, Oregon, and an up and coming leader on her team, Jenna Kuehn is November’s Zag of the Month. Nominated for her tireless work ethic, her selflessness and desire to always help others before herself, Kuehn’s teammates and S.A.A.C. representatives feel the award is well deserved.
A sophomore nursing major, Kuehn impresses many with her ability to balance a difficult course load and the commitment to volleyball, while holding a 3.64 GPA. Kuehn’s academic successes have resulted in WCC All-Academic Team recognition along with university recognition on the Dean’s List.
Outside of the classroom, Kuehn is an example to other student-athletes, particularly those on her team. When asked why Kuehn should be recognized a fellow Zag stated, “she is the perfect representation of what it means to be a Zag. She excels on the court, in the classroom and in the community. She is a servant leader on the team and a consistent competitor.”
Kuehn’s community involvement has included volunteer work with Catholic Charities, helping at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk, handing out candy at the annual Trunk-or-Treat event, and building homes for Habitat for Humanity. She is known on her team for being the first to encourage others to get involved in the community, despite her already challenging schedule.
On the court, Kuehn is respected for her tenacity and competitive nature, always pushing others to excel. Teammate Faith Smith calls Kuehn, “very competitive and very driven, but also the most kindhearted.” In her freshman campaign, Kuehn played in 27 matches, contributing 356 assists and added 155 digs, 13 kill 12 aces and 7 blocks. As a sophomore this fall, Kuehn was one of two on her team to play every set, starting in 24 matches. She ended the season with 462 assists, 258 digs, and 162 kills, each being a career high. Kuehn was named to the GCU Invite All-Tournament team in August and received WCC Player of the Week honors in September.
With the determination and excellence Kuehn has exhibited thus far, many believe she will continue to grow as a leader on both the court and in the student-athlete population. Respected for how she embodies being a Zag, Kuehn is November’s Zag of the Month.
A student-athlete selected as Zag-of-the-Month exhibits effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, campus involvement, community service, dedication to team, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future GU students and student-athletes. Each month GU’s S.A.A.C. nominates and selects one of their peers for the award.
