Tutorial Program

Goals of the Tutorial Program
The ultimate goal of the Gonzaga University Athletic Department Tutorial Program is to foster academic independence, self-sufficiency, and confidence within the student-athletes it serves. In cooperation with Student-Athlete Support Services, this goal is achieved with help from tutors who employ active learning practices and motivation strategies while facilitating learner independence.

Active Learning
Active learning environments are safe, interactive, collaborative and positive, and are a place where students feel engaged and interested. As tutors and tutees work together to achieve academic goals, tutors serve as facilitators and tutees perform the work.

Motivation is an important factor in achieving academic success and every individual is motivated differently. In addition to understanding the unique motivators of each tutee, our tutors are encouraged to employ general motivation strategies. Tutors will emphasize progress toward goals, nurture positive attitudes, forge strong and trusting working relationships, foster a sense of ownership in one's academics, and show tutees that they are capable of mastering subject matter.

Our tutors are committed to the Department's goal of creating independent learners. Tutors assist tutees in developing strong study skills, setting clear and achievable goals, understanding one's strengths and weaknesses, and planning for the semester and specific assignments. Tutors also emphasize the importance of staying organized and prioritizing tasks. As independent students themselves, our tutors are intended to be leaders and academic role models.

Employment with GU Athletics
The Gonzaga University Athletic Department Tutorial Program is staffed by undergraduate and graduate students. Tutors are hired based upon many factors including subjects of expertise, academic success, ability to teach and listen, professionalism, and amicability. Tutors must adhere to all rules and expectations set forth by the Department, Gonzaga University, and the NCAA.
