MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Junior Heather Bowman posted 27 points to help lead the Gonzaga University women's basketball team to a hard-fought 60-55 victory over the University of Utah on the second day of the WBCA Classic hosted by Marquette University Saturday.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-1 with the win while the Utes dropped 1-4 overall. Bowman opened the game scoring the Zags first 12 points and had 18 at the half. The forward was 6-for-12 from the field and 6-of-7 at the free throw line.

The first half saw four ties along with Gonzaga and Utah exchanging leads 10 times. The Bulldogs held the largest lead of the half at seven points, 15-8 at the 9:03 mark after junior Vivian Frieson converted an old fashion 3-point play.

Gonzaga, who only hit 30.3 percent (10-for-33) from the field in the first half, held the slight 28-26 lead into halftime after Frieson grab an offensive board and scored on the put back.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with two-straight baskets to put the score at 32-26 but Utah battled, as it did in the first half, to tie the game for the fifth time at 32-32.

The see-saw battle continued for most of the second half. The Utes largest lead of the final frame was three at 39-36.

Gonzaga finally regained the lead for good at the 5:21 mark on two free throws by Bowman; who scored seven of her nine points in the second half from the charity stripe.

Junior Tiffanie Shives sealed the deal for the Bulldogs hitting 3-of-4 free throws in the final 17 seconds.

Frieson had her first double-double of the season scoring 12 points and grabbing a game-high 11 boards.

Utah had a more balanced attack than Gonzaga as four players scored in double-digits. Kalee Whipple led the way with 16.

Gonzaga finished the day hitting only 30.8 percent from the field (20-for-65) and was 67.9 percent (19-28) at the free throw line.
