Jan. 3, 2011
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University women's basketball junior Kayla Standish was named West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday. Standish shares the weekly award with Louella Tomlinson of Saint Mary's College.
Standish averaged a double-double over the Bulldogs' two contests this past week. She began the week scoring a team-high 16 points, along with bringing down a season-high 12 rebounds in the Zags nine-point setback to then No. 14/16 Notre Dame in their first game of the State Farm Holiday Hoops Classic. Standish also had two steals, two blocks and one assist in the loss. Standish followed that performance up scoring a season-high 23 points, two points off tying her career-high, hitting 9-of-14 from the field and sinking all five free throw attempts in GU's win over Seattle University, hosts of the tournament. She again grabbed 12 boards, but this time six were offensive. She added a career-high four assists, and blocked two more shots and stole the ball once. On the week, she averaged 19.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and shot 47.0 percent from the field. For her performances, Standish was named to the State Farm Holiday Hoops Classic All-Tournament Team.
Standish has registered double-figure points in eight-straight contests and has had 20-plus point performances in five of the last six Bulldogs games. This is Standish's second Player of the Week award this season and the Bulldogs fourth overall.
Also nominated this week were Renahy Young of Loyola Marymount University, Lauren Bell of Pepperdine University and Ricki Radanovich of Santa Clara University.
