Heather Bowman Named WCC Co-Player of the Week
Jan. 18, 2010
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University women's basketball senior Heather Bowman has been named Co-West Coast Conference Player of the Week announced by the conference office Monday. Bowman shares the honor with Miranda Ayim of Pepperdine University. This is the second time this season Bowman has garnered Co-Player of the Week and the fourth time overall a Bulldog has been tabbed WCC Player of the Week as junior Courtney Vandersloot and senior Vivian Frieson have also been honored this season.
Bowman, a forward from Spokane, helped Gonzaga to a 2-0 week and in the process became the all-time leading scorer in West Coast Conference history. Bowman surpassed Martha Sheldon's - of the University of Portland - mark of 1,953 points scored from 1987-92, having now scored 1,956 points during her tenure as a Zag. Bowman went into GU's contest against the University of San Diego needing 19 points to top Sheldon and finished with 21. She claimed the title at the 9:49 mark of the second half when she received a pass from sophomore Katelan Redmon and scored a fast break layup. One minute later she added to her total with her final bucket of the game.
For the week, Bowman averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steal per game while shooting a blistering 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the field.
She scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the Zags 87-52 victory over Saint Mary's College. She also was the primary defender on SMC's Louella Tomlinson, who came into the game averaging a league-leading 17.8 points per game. Tomlinson finished with only 11 points, four of which were scored before the Bulldogs ran away with the game.
In GU's victory over San Diego, who, like Saint Mary's came into the game a perfect 3-0 in conference, Bowman finished with 21 points, hitting 9-of 14 from the field (64.3 percent) and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
This is Bowman's 10th WCC Player of the Week honor of her career.
