Vandersloot Named To Naismith Trophy Midseason Top 30
Feb. 14, 2011
ATLANTA – Gonzaga University women’s basketball senior Courtney Vandersloot made her second midseason list of the year as she was named to the 2010-11 Naismith midseason top 30 list, announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club Monday.
The midseason 30 list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the 2010-11 college basketball season. The Naismith Trophy, presented by AT&T, will be awarded on April 4, 2011 at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Indianapolis. The competition for this year’s Naismith Trophy in women’s basketball is tougher than ever with 23 schools represented.
Vandersloot, who was the inaugural Zag to make the list in 2009-10, now becomes the first two-time midseason honoree. The Kent, Wash., native leads the nation is assists per game for the second-consecutive season at 9.8 per contest. The point guard became the first player since 1995 and the fourth overall player to pass out 1,000 assists when she handed out nine in Gonzaga’s 73-59 win over Pepperdine University this past Saturday. She now has 1,006 assists to her credit.
Vandersloot also leads the Bulldogs and the West Coast Conference in points per game at 18.0, has registered 12 double-doubles and scored double-figure points in all but one contest this season, including 11 20-plus point outings. “From coast to coast you will see some of the most exciting basketball anywhere and the level of competition is outstanding,” said Eric Oberman, Atlanta Tipoff Club executive director. “I expect the race for this year’s Naismith Trophy go right down to the wire.”
Since 2005, presenting sponsor AT&T has set the standard in allowing fans to participate in determining the trophy winner. Through the power and ease of text messaging fan voting will account for 25 percent of all the final results – more than any other national college basketball award.
“AT&T is proud to give college basketball fans – arguably the most enthusiastic sports fans – the chance to applaud their favorite student-athletes’ performances,” said Jamie Kerr, senior manager, AT&T National Sponsorships. “Through our text-message voting program, fans have the chance to select the winner of the prestigious 2011 Women’s Naismith Trophy.”
Vandersoot also was named to the John R. Wooden midseason top 20 list earlier this year.
