Janelle Bekkering Earns Academic All-District Honors

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University women’s basketball senior Janelle Bekkering has been named to the 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District 8 Women’s Basketball Team, which was released by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Bekkering earned first team honors and is now eligible to earn Academic All-America.
Bekkering currently holds a 3.48 GPA in civil engineering. The Taber, Alberta native is first on the team in 3-pointers made with 33 and fourth in points per game, averaging 10.2.points per contest. She is also averaging 4.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest.
Five student-athletes, including Bekkering, were selected to the District 8 first-team and will now be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Also joining Bekkering on the first-team were Rachel Clancy (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo), Tara Cronin (University of Portland), Amanda Johnson (University of Oregon) and Jessica Vargas (Loyola Marymount University).
Bekkering and the Zags hit the road for the final time in West Coast Conference play this week. Gonzaga plays at Santa Clara University Thursday at 7 p.m. and at the University of San Francisco Saturday at 2 p.m.
