March 29, 2011
NEW YORK - Gonzaga University women's basketball player Courtney Vandersloot has been named to the Associated Press All-American Second Team, becoming the first player in Bulldog and West Coast Conference history to do so.
Vandersloot, who was honorable mention the past two seasons, was joined on the second team list by Oklahoma senior Danielle Robinson, Xavier senior Amber Harris, Stanford junior Nnemka Ogwumike and Duke senior Jasmine Thomas.
Vandersloot led the Bulldogs to their inaugural trip to the Elite Eight before falling to the top-seed Stanford, and Ogwumike, Monday night. She averaged 29.3 points, 10.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals during the magical run.
She is the first male or female in NCAA Division I history to accumulate more than 2,000 points and 1,000 assists, finishing with 2,073 points and 1,118 assists. Vandersloot ended the year leading the nation in assists for the second-consecutive season at 10.2 and is 16th in scoring at 19.8 points per contest.
Vandersloot broke the NCAA single-season assist record, which has stood since 1987, dishing out 367 this year and broke the GU single-season scoring mark, which had been in place since 1985 with 712 total points scored this year.
The Bulldogs finished the year with a stellar 31-5 record after starting the year off 2-3.
The AP first team consisted of Jeanette Pohlen of Stanford, Maya More of Connecticut, only the second four-time first-team pick, Brittney Griner of Baylor, Jantel Lavender of Ohio State and Danielle Adams of Texas A&M.
