Stack Inducted Into Indiana Basketball Hall

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Former Gonzaga University All-American Maria Stack was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in ceremonies held April 28. Stack was a 1985 Naismith Award winner during her 1984-85 senior season at Gonzaga, the only season she played for the Bulldogs. She still holds single-season records for points (707), field goals made (264), free throws (179), assists (203) and steals (96). She was also an NAIA All-America selection. The Bulldogs went 28-4 and advanced to the NAIA District playoffs. An outstanding high school player at Columbus East High in Columbus, Ind., Stack was named Miss Basketball 1980 for the state of Indiana after leading Columbus East to runner-up in the Indiana State 4A Tournament where she scored a championship game record 42 points, a mark that still stands. She also grabbed a championship game record 22 rebounds, another mark still in place some 27 years later. She went 14-for-20 from the free throw line in the title game, Columbus East finishing the season 22-3. Her 715 points is still the 17th-best single-season total in Indiana high school history, and her 1,518 career points are the best in school history. She was also an adidas All-American. She attended Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colo., where she still holds the single-game record for points with 49 and the career scoring mark with 1,119 points for a 27.2 career ppg average. Her 624 points in 1983 and her 29.5 ppg are still single-season records. Stack's 17 free throws still stand as a single-game record. She was a two-time Junior College All-American. Following Otero JC she attended San Diego State University for one season before ending her collegiate career with the Bulldogs. Stack was also a member of the 2005 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team that honored players from the 1980 season.
