SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University announced the first five women’s basketball non-conference games of the 2009-10 season yesterday, and continues today with games 6-10. Featured are two games against 2009 NCAA Tournament participants in Stanford University, who appeared in the Final Four, and the University of Montana. GAME 6 – SUN., NOV. 29 AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY, 2 p.m.
Stanford University rang up a 33-5 overall record, its eighth 30-win season in program history, in 2008-09, made its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament Final Four, and captured its 18th Pacific-10 regular-season title in school history with a 17-1 mark. Stanford also won the Pac-10 Tournament on top of its regular-season crown. The Cardinals came in at No. 2 in the final regular-season edition of the Associated Press Poll and at No. 3 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll.

Stanford returns Jayne Appel who was named State Farm Coaches’ All-American and the Pac-10 Player of the Year in 2008-09. Appel and Jeanette Pohlen were both named to the John R. Wooden Preseason Award list and the State Farm ‘Wade Watch’ List late this summer.

Gonzaga and Stanford will be meeting for the first time in school history. The Bulldogs, however, have played at Maples Pavilion, the Cardinal’s home court. In 2007, the Zags played their first-ever NCAA Tournament game at the Maples Pavilion, falling in the first round to Middle Tennessee State University.

GAME 7 – TUE., DEC. 1 VS. EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY (McCarthey Athletic Center), 6 p.m.
Eastern Washington University went 10-19, 5-11 in Big Sky Conference play in 2008-09, a significant improvement on its 4-25 record from the previous year and 1-15 mark in league play. The Eagles return 11 of 12 letterwinners from a season ago, including all five starters.

The Bulldogs defeated the Eagles in their last meeting 71-56 in Cheney, Wash., Dec. 4, 2008. Bowman finished with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds in the 15-point victory, with teammate Tiffanie Shives added 19 points. Starting point guard Vandersloot missed the game due to a sprained ankle.

Gonzaga leads the all-time series 23-13 and has won the last five meetings. The last time the Zags and Eagles played at the McCarthey Athletic Center was Dec. 29, 2008 when GU took the 97-61 win in front of 2,105 Bulldog faithful.

GAME 8 – FRI., DEC. 4 AT MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY, 5 p.m.
Montana State University finished the 2008-09 season with a 15-15 overall record and an 8-8 Big Sky Conference mark. The Bobcats season ended in the semifinals of the Big Sky Tournament, falling to WNIT participant Portland State University.

The Bulldogs defeated Montana State 100-47 at the McCarthey Athletic Center last season. Gonzaga, who scored 100+ points three times last season, was led by Bowman and Vandersloot. Bowman scored a game-high 25 points in the 53-point victory, while Vandersloot nearly had a triple-double as she scored 19 points, dished out a career-high 13 assists and grabbed seven rebounds.

Montana State holds the 10-8 lead in the all-time series, but Gonzaga has won the last three meetings. The last time the Zags played at Montana State they won 82-63 (Dec. 12, 2007).

Cal State Northridge closed out the 2008-09 season with an 8-23 overall mark and a 4-12 record in the Big West Conference. The Matadors earned a win in the first round of the Big West Tournament before falling in the second round.

This will be the first meeting between Gonzaga and Cal State Northridge.

GAME 10 – SUN DEC. 11 VS. UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA (McCarthey Athletic Center), 6 p.m.

No. 13 seed Montana fell to No. 4 seed University of Pittsburgh in the first round.
