Sept. 2, 2009

SPOKANE, Wash. – The final five Gonzaga University non-conference women’s basketball games slated for 2009-10 feature four teams that made a splash in postseason a year ago, including two that made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2009.

The Bulldogs are set to play in arguably one of the best in-season tournaments when they travel to Nevada for the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic. Gonzaga plays two Big 12 Conference members in Baylor University and Texas A&M; both of which played in the Sweet 16 last season.

Check out the video of junior Janelle Bekkering announcing the final five non-conference opponents here.

GAME 11 – SUN., DEC. 13 AT PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY, 2 p.m.
Portland State University went 23-10 a year ago and narrowly missed out on making the NCAA Tournament. The Vikings lost to the University of Montana in the Big Sky Conference tournament championship game, but were selected to play in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). It was PSU’s first-ever post-season appearance at the Division I level. The Vikings season came to an end in the second round of the WNIT after falling to in-state rival Oregon State University. In Big Sky Conference action, Portland State finished 14-2 for its best record ever.

Gonzaga last played Portland State Dec. 14, 2008, defeating the Vikings 86-61 in the McCarthey Athletic Center. Heather Bowman registered a double-double in the victory, scoring 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, both game-highs. Claire Raap added 12 points for Gonzaga, eclipsing her then-career-high by two points.

The Bulldogs lead the all-time series with the Vikings 9-6 and have won five of the last six meetings. Gonzaga did however lose to Portland State the last time it played in Portland. The Vikings took a 75-72 victory over the Zags on Nov. 25, 2007.

GAME 12 – SAT., DEC. 19 vs. BAYLOR UNIVERSITY (at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic - Las Vegas, NV), 7:45 p.m.
Baylor University finished another highly successful season in 2008-09 as it was selected to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in program history, made it to the Sweet 16 of the Big Dance, finished the year ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press Poll, earned second place in the Big 12 Conference with a 12-4 mark, claimed the championship of the league’s postseason tournament and posted a 29-6 overall record.

This will be the first meeting between Gonzaga and Baylor and only the third Big 12 Conference member the Zags have played in school history. The last time the Bulldogs played a Big 12 school was in the second round of the 2008 WNIT when they lost to the University of Colorado 82-68.

GAME 13 – SUN., DEC. 20 vs. TEXAS A&M (at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic – Las Vegas, NV), 7:45 p.m.
Texas A&M capped off the 2008-09 season with the second-most victories in school history with a 27-8 overall record and its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament including back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances. The Aggies earned a program-best No. 3 national ranking during the season in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Top 25 polls. In addition, the Aggies reached the championship of the Big 12 Conference Tournament and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row.

This will be the first meeting between Gonzaga and Texas A&M.

GAME 14 – SUN., DEC. 27 – VS. UC IRVINE (McCarthey Athletic Center), 2 p.m.
UC Irvine closed out the 2008-09 season with a 7-23 overall mark and a 4-12 record in the Big West Conference.

This will only be the second-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and Anteaters. UC Irvine won the only match-up 84-65 during the 1983-84 season.

GAME 15 – WED., DEC. 30 – VS. UC SANTA BARBARA (McCarthey Athletic Center), 6 p.m.
UC Santa Barbara made an appearance into the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in 13 seasons in 2008-09 after receiving the automatic berth by winning the Big West Tournament. The Gauchos fell to Stanford University in the first round of the Big Dance and ended their season with a 22-10 mark. UCSB also won the Big West regular-season title with a 15-1 mark.

The Gauchos defeated the Bulldogs last season 59-47 on Dec. 7 in Santa Barbara. At the time, the loss was only the second of the season for Gonzaga.

This will be the second meeting between the two schools.
