Janelle Bekkering Named To Canadian National Team
Sept. 8, 2010
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's basketball senior Janelle Bekkering has been named to the 2010 Canadian Senior Women's National Team (SWNT). The forward/guard, who helped the 2009 SWNT squad qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championships for Women by placing third at the FIBA Americas Championships for Women last September, was one of 12 to make this year's team.
"Making the team this summer and playing for my country is one of the highest honors I can think of," said Bekkering. "I am so excited to represent my country at Worlds this summer and to compete against the best."
"I am thrilled for Janelle," stated Bulldog head coach Kelly Graves. "What an experience for her. We obviously are going to miss her for the first month of training but the experience of playing in the World Championships is priceless. We wish her and Team Canada well."
SWNT is off to Europe for final preparations leading up to the 2010 FIBA World Championships for Women; which takes place Sept. 23-Oct. 3 in the Czech Republic.
The first stop is France, Sept. 9-11 to compete in a series of national team exhibition games against France, Japan and Belarus. The SWNT will then head to Athens, Greece Sept. 18-19 for a pair of exhibition games against the Greek national team for its final tune-up.
Along with Bekkering, Team Canada features national team veteran talent such as Teresa Gabriele (Mission, B.C.), Kim Smith (Mission, B.C.), Chelsea Aubry (Kitchener, Ont.) and Tamara and Alisha Tatham (Brampton, Ont.) as well as young rising star Natalie Achonwa (Guelph, Ont.)
