Sept. 28, 2007

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University associate athletic director Heather Gores has been named to the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee, a term that expires Sept. 1, 2012.

The main function of the 10-person committee is to select the 64 teams for the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship every March.

Gores is in her 14th year at Gonzaga and her eighth in athletic administration. In May, 2000, Gores was promoted to Senior Women's Administrator after serving the previous six seasons as an assistant coach with the women's basketball program, and in 2006 was named an associate athletic director.

Prior to joining the Gonzaga family in 1994, Gores worked for two years as an assistant coach at Washington State University where she was a 4-year letter winner for the Cougars. During her playing career in Pullman, Gores scored 981 points, a mark that still ranks 12th in school annals. The former Heather Norman finished her career as WSU's leader in 3-point shots made with 133 which still ranks second all-time, and she still ranks third in single-season treys with 61 which at the time was also a school record.

"This is a great appointment for Heather, the university and the West Coast Conference," Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth said. "This is another reflection of the quality people Gonzaga hires who gain the respect of their peers at the local, regional and national level. This is one of the most visible committees within the ranks of the NCAA. It also further validates Gonzaga and the West Coast Conference as being well respected nationally."

WCC Commissioner Michael Gilleran also applauded the appointment. "Heather's ability to think strategically, combined with her extensive background as a player and coach, will make her a valuable asset to this important NCAA committee. It will be great for our conference to be represented on this committee as the NCAA explores ways to further grow the sport of women's basketball," Gilleran noted.

Born in Santa Maria, Calif., she married Greg Gores in August of 1998. They have two children - 6-year-old daughter Kaitlin and 4-year-old son Garrett.
