Blue/Red Box Score Get Acrobat Reader

SPOKANE, Wash. - Senior Tiffanie Shives and sophomore Kayla Standish scored 18 and 15 points, respectively, to highlight Friday's Blue and Red scrimmage for the Gonzaga University women's basketball team. Shives' 18 points, on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, including 2-of-5 on 3-pointers, helped lead the Blue to a 53-46 victory over Standish and the Red.

Along with Shives, senior Heather Bowman and junior Janelle Bekkering both also scored in double-figures for the Blue squad. Bowman had 14 points on 3-for-10 shooting, along with hitting 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Bekkering was 4-of-6 from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the 3-point arc.

Sophomore Shannon Reader and freshman Kaitlyn Petersen both added four points as the Blue team closed out the night shooting an impressive 52.8 percent (19-of-36) from the field, including 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from 3-point range and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the charity stripe.

The Red team also had three players score in double-figures as sophomore Katelan Redmon added 13 and senior Vivian Frieson chipped in 10.

Reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year Courtney Vandersloot added eight points for the Red squad, dished out a game-high six assists, made four steals and grabbed two rebounds.

The Red squad finished the night shooting 43.6 percent (17-of-39) from the floor, was 33.3 percent (3-of-9) on 3-pointers and hit 90.0 percent (9-of-10) of its free throws.

"We are excited for the season," said head coach Kelly Graves after the game. "I think you saw it tonight we have a ton of talent, a lot of kids that can score baskets and a good mix of veterans and an influx of talented young players."

Gonzaga will host Warner Pacific University in an exhibition contest Friday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. before opening its regular season at South Dakota State University Friday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs open their home slate with back-to-back Pacific-10 Conference members. The Zags begin the home slate against USC on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. followed by the University of Washington on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m.

"We have so many big time games, starting right from our opening night at South Dakota State University," explained Graves. "South Dakota State is a team that will be ranked and it will be a game that a lot of people nationally will be watching. Our first two home games against USC and UW are going to be big. They both are good and will be tough."
