Dec. 16, 2008

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga University women’s basketball team continues to receive votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Top 25 poll. The Bulldogs received two votes in the latest poll, released Tuesday. The Zags received seven votes a week ago, but dropped to only two after going 1-1 for the second-straight week. GU’s only loss last week was to South Dakota State University, who cracked the Top 25 for the first time in school history at 22.

Gonzaga, currently 9-3 on the season, plays its final road non-conference game Friday, Dec. 19 when it takes on the University of Montana. Game time is set for 3 p.m. (pacific).

The other news in this week’s poll isn't at the top. The first six teams from last week's poll remain in the same position, led by No. 1 Connecticut.

Instead, it's the continued inconsistency of Tennessee that draws notice. The Lady Vols (7-2) slipped to No. 13, tied for its lowest ranking thus far this season, after losing to No. 5 Texas 73-59 on Sunday.

In The Associated Press poll, released on Monday, Tennessee is No. 11, ending its streak of 211 straight weeks in the top 10. The previous time the Lady Vols were out of the top 10 was on March 3, 1997. The run went 56 weeks longer than the men's record of 155 set by UCLA.

Connecticut (7-0) leads the poll again, getting all 31 first-place votes and 775 points. North Carolina (11-0), Texas A&M (9-0), Stanford (7-1) and Texas (9-0) round out the top five.

Oklahoma (8-2), which went West and beat California over the weekend, is sixth, with Notre Dame (8-1) and Baylor (9-1) tied for seventh. Cal (8-2) is ninth, followed by unbeaten Auburn (10-0).
