SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing Novice 8+ placed fifth at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, while the Varsity 4+ earned a sixth place finish Sunday afternoon at Lake Natoma just outside Sacramento, Calif. The Gonzaga Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ both earned second place finishes in their respective Petite Finals to garner eighth place finishes overall.

The Novice 8+, who had its string of two-straight first place Pac-10 finishes broken this year, placed third in its elimination heat to garner a spot in the Grand Final. The University of California won the heat with a time of 6:57.30, while Oregon State University crossed the finish line in second at 7:01.30. The Bulldogs claimed third and the final spot in the Grand Final with a time of 7:13.30.

California dominated the Novice 8+ final earning a seven-second victory over the University of Washington with a time of 7:14.20. The Huskies were clocked in at 7:21.90, just two seconds ahead of third place finishers Washington State University and Oregon State University who both finished with a time of 7:23.60. Gonzaga claimed the fifth place spot with a time of 7:43.30; one second ahead of UC Davis who crossed the finish line in 7:44.90.

The Varsity 4+ boat earned a spot in its Grand Final by finishing third in its elimination heat. Again California took top honors in the Bulldogs heat, clocking in at 7:32.50. Oregon State came in second at 7:39.70 while the Zags had a time of 7:43.00 to clinch third place.

The Varsity 4+ Grand Final was won by Washington in a time of 7:39.60. California took second at 7:43.00 and the University of Southern California squeaked out a third place finish with a time of 7:51.00. Washington State and Oregon State finished fourth and fifth, respectively with times of 7:52.20 and 7:55.50. The Zags, who placed second a year ago, finished sixth with a time of 7:59.30.

The Bulldog Varsity 8+ also had a solid showing placing eighth overall for the second-straight season. The Zags finished their morning heat race fifth with a time of 6:50.30. For the third-straight heat race California claimed the top spot with a finish of 6:32.20, followed by USC in second at 6:40.80 and Oregon State in third at 6:41.40. Western Washington University claimed a fourth place finish clocking in at 6:45.30.

 

 

In the Petite Final the Bulldogs came in second with a time of 6:55.70. UCLA earned the Petite Final victory in a time of 6:53.30. Western Washington placed third at 6:58.20, with UC Davis fourth at 7:00.60 and Sacramento State University in fifth at 7:10.90.

The Second Varsity 8+ finished fourth in its heat race, just missing third place and a spot in the Grand Final. The Zags crossed the finish line with a time of 6:57.00; four seconds behind USC who claimed third place at 6:53.70. Washington narrowly earned the win with a finish of 6:47.50, just ahead of WSU who had a time of 6:47.70.

In the Second Varsity 8+ Petite Final, the Bulldogs pulled out a second place finish in a time of 7:09.10. UCLA took gold with a time of 7:03.90. Third place went to UC Davis (7:14.60), followed by Sacramento State (7:19.20) and Western Washington (7:33.80).
