Women's Novice Squads Successful at Head of the Snake

Pullman, Wash. – The Gonzaga University women’s rowing squad continued to improve its racing as it won three of six races at the Head of the Snake, hosted by Washington State University at Wawawai Landing in Pullman, Wash., Friday. The Bulldogs swept all of the Novice races over the Cougars Friday. Gonzaga’s first victory of the afternoon came in the Novice 8+ matchup. The Zags claimed a 50-second victory with a finish of 17:26.05. The Cougars finished the course at 18:16.75. The GU Second Novice 8+ also earned a win with finish of 18:59.86. WSU’s Second Novice 8+ couldn’t get under the 19 minute mark as it was clocked in at 19:11.76. The final victory for Gonzaga came in the Third Varsity 8+ who had a time of 19:20.77. Washington State finished at 19:25.73. The Cougars did capture the all-important Varsity 8+ race, winning with a time of 15:17.52. Gonzaga, who improved on its time from a week ago at the Head of the Spokane by two minutes, crossed the finish line in 16:08.35. The race was delayed 45 minutes due to heavy winds. The first two flights, when finally racing, still rowed into very strong head winds. The second set of flights had much smoother water as the darkness set in. The Bulldogs close out their fall racing next Sunday at the Head of the Lake, hosted by the University of Washington. Head of the Snake Results – Oct. 30, 2009 – Pullman, Wash.
