WCC and WIRA Championships On Tap For Women's Rowing

ON TAP: The Gonzaga University women's rowing team heads to Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif., this weekend for both the West Coast Conference Championship and the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships. The Zags are looking to win their 13th West Coast Conference title in 15 years, and recapture the title after last year's disappointing loss, and looking to claim the Junior Varsity 8+ victory for the fifth time in seven years and the Novice 8+ win for the fifth time in six years at the WIRA's.
WHEN ARE THE WCC'S...WHEN ARE THE WIRA'S?: The West Coast Conference Championships are set for Friday, April 29. The Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships will begin Saturday, April 30 and will conclude Sunday, May 1.
HEAD COACH Melissa Flint ON THE UPCOMING CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND: "Our goal all year has been to reclaim the WCC title and I believe everything is in place to make that happen. We are coming off a great win over Western Washington and have had two strong weeks of practice. I am looking forward to a competitive and exciting weekend of racing."
WEST COAST CONFERENCE SCHEDULE: There will be three races at the West Coast Conference Championship. The event will start off with the Varsity 4+ race at 9:20 a.m. The Junior Varsity 8+ will then race at 9:40 a.m. The marquee Varsity 8+ race will close out the event at 10 a.m.
WESTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE ROWING ASSOCIATION SCHEDULE: The Gonzaga University women's rowing team will race five boats at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships. The Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and Second Novice 8+ races will all be Finals only, set for Sunday. The Novice 8+ will have three heats on Saturday and Final on Sunday.
Novice 8+ - Heat 1 - Saturday, 11:10 a.m. (Gonzaga, UC Santa Barbara, Humboldt State, Arizona State, UC Irvine, Pacific)
Varsity 4+ - Final - Sunday, 8:10 a.m. (San Diego, Sacramento, Gonzaga, UC Davis, San Diego State, Saint Mary's, Creighton)
Second Novice 8+ - Final - Sunday, 9:30 a.m. (Gonzaga, San Diego, UC Santa Barbara)
Novice 8+ - Final - Sunday, 10:10 a.m. (TBA)
Junior Varsity 8+ - Final - Sunday, 10:50 a.m. (San Diego, Sacramento, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Saint Mary's, Creighton)
Varsity 8+ - Final - Sunday, Noon (San Diego, Sacramento, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Saint Mary's, UC Davis, Creighton)

LAST YEAR AT THE WCC CHAMPIONSHIPS: The 2010 West Coast Conference women's rowing title came down to the Varsity 8+ race and it was a heart pounding finish. The Bulldogs battled the University of San Diego back and forth for the full 2,000-meters but in the end the Toreros pulled out one of the slightest margins of victory in WCC history, winning the race and their first-ever title in a time of 6:43.6, just ahead of the Bulldogs at 6:43.8. San Diego, who also won the Varsity 4+ race and placed second in the Junior Varsity 8+ race, claimed the WCC Championship with 28 total points, just ahead of Gonzaga who accumulated 26 points with a win in the Junior Varsity 8+ race and two second place finishes. Loyola Marymount University was third with 18 points, Saint Mary's College earned fourth with 12 points and Santa Clara University took fifth with three points.
LAST YEAR AT THE WIRA CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Gonzaga University women's rowing squad closed out the 2010 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships winning the Novice 8+ for the fourth time in five years and claiming the Junior Varsity 8+ victory for the fourth time in six years. The Bulldog also placed third in the Varsity 8+ and fourth in the Varsity 4+.
