Mark Voorhees Added to Women's Rowing Staff
Aug. 22, 2008
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's rowing head coach Melissa Flint has announced the hiring of Mark Voorhees as an assistant coach on the Bulldog staff. Voorhees is no stranger to Gonzaga having rowed for the Zag men's program from 2000-04. "Mark will be assisting with the entire women's team, as well as taking on the responsibilities of the boathouse manager," stated Flint. "I'm very excited to bring Mark back to Gonzaga as a coach. He knows our program, and has had a lot of experience in the rowing world outside of collegiate rowing. He will be a great addition to our coaching staff." While a student-athlete at Gonzaga, Voorhees earned All-Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) first team honors two-straight seasons (2002, 2003). As a senior he helped lead the Varsity 4+ to a ninth place finish at the IRA National Championships and a third place finish at the WIRA's. His junior season, he was part of the Varsity 8+ boat that took fifth at the ECAC National Rowing Invitational and the Varsity 8+ that took silver at the WIRA's. Voorhees is currently in his fourth year training and racing at the pre-elite and elite levels for Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia. He has also competed in several national selection regattas, along with World Championships and Olympic Trails. Voorhees, who was a volunteer rowing coach this past spring at Penn Charter High School, graduated from Gonzaga in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science.
