Defending Champ Ciera Min Just Two Strokes Back After Day One At WCC Championships
April 20, 2017
PROVO, Utah – The Gonzaga Bulldogs opened day one at the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah with a team score of 308, sitting at +20 and one stroke back of San Francisco for third.
Reigning individual champion Ciera Min is right back in the hunt, shooting a +1, 73, to sit in a tie for second place just two strokes back of leader Hira Naveed of Pepperdine. Teammate and reigning WCC Golfer of the Month Bianca Pagdanganan was one stroke back of that with a +2, 74, and is tied for eighth. Jena Gao shot a 78 and is in 17th after her best round in her last 14 outings. Jessica Mangrobang shot an 83 for GU and is tied for 23rd.
Min made up for three bogeys on the front with a birdie on number five, and made pars on the first eight holes on the back before birdieing number 18 on her way to the clubhouse. Pagdanganan only had one bogey on the front and covered up for two on the back with a birdie on the par-four 16th. Jena Gao started the day -1 with a birdie on the first hole, and was only +1 through the first nine holes.
“Ciera and Bianca both hit the ball very well today,” Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said. “If they continue to hit the ball like that they will figure out the greens and be fine. Jena had her best ball-striking round in some time and was close to shooting a great round. We know the course better now and look to improve tomorrow.”
The Zags played well on the par-four holes, going +9 as a team, second best in the field. Min was even on the par-four holes, third-best in the field. Pagdanganan posted 14 pars and Min holed 13, second and fourth in the field respectively after day one.
Pepperdine finished +3 for the day and leads BYU by five strokes. Gonzaga will open day two tomorrow at 8:31 am PST with Jessica Mangrobang getting it going first off hole 10. Live scoring is available at GoZags.com.
