Bulldogs Wrap Up Week At The WCC Championships
April 22, 2017
PROVO, Utah – The Gonzaga Bulldogs wrapped up the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday with a final round 309 to finish +64 in fifth place at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.
Bianca Pagdanganan was the top finisher for GU in 11th place after a second-straight round of 76 to finish +10. Her Saturday round did not feature any red scores, but she did manage to limit any damage with 15 pars. Ciera Min had the best score of the day for GU with a 75. She recovered from three early bogeys with birdies on seven, 10, and 15 to go even on the back and finish in 12th place at +11.
Jena Gao was the third Bulldog in the 70s on the final day with a 78. She started hot with birdies on two and four to go two-under through four holes, but ran into some trouble in the middle holes to finish +20 and in a tie for 16th in the event. Jessica Mangrobang had a final round 80 to finish +23 in 19th place. She had a rough first nine on Saturday, going +7, but was only +1 on the back with a birdie on 15. Nina Novilla fired a final round 85 for GU.
BYU claimed the title going +13, 11 strokes better than Pepperdine. Alex White of the Cougars fired a final round two-under 70 to claim the individual title at +1. Two-day leader Hira Naveed of Pepperdine had a final round 76 to fall out of the lead.
The Bulldogs finished +10 in the tournament on par-five holes, which was third-best in the field. Pagdanganan finished second with 38 pars and sixth on the par-five holes, shooting even.
“We just didn’t make putts this week,” Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said. “Bianca hit the ball well enough this week to win the tournament, but just never made a putt. Playing with four underclassmen sometimes is costly in big moments, but the experience they gained this spring and this week will pay dividends for our program in the future. Ciera has been a great leader and mentor to them, and will be dearly missed.”
This marks the final team round of the year for the Bulldogs. They will now wait to see which individuals will qualify for the NCAA Regionals, May 8-10.
