Zags Host First Round Of CDA Resort Collegiate Invite
Sept. 26, 2017
COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The Gonzaga Bulldogs hosted the first-ever Coeur d’Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational with 36 holes and an 18-team field on Tuesday afternoon at Coeur d’Alene Resort. Jessica Mangrobang led the charge shooting 73-74 at +5 and in a tie for 43rd. Jena Gao (72-76) and Francesca Santoni (73-75) were one shot back of that in a tie for 50th.
Three Zags shot +2 or better in the first round, led by Jena Gao who fired a +1 (72), one off her career low, with birdies on the par-four seventh and par-four 13th, going even on the front nine. Jessica Mangrobang was one stroke back at 73, starting with a birdie on the par-five first to go with a birdie on the par-three 14th, the famous floating green. Francesca Santoni recorded a 73, her lowest round in her young GU career. She went +1 on the front with a birdie on the par-five ninth. She finished the back nine with a birdie as well, on the par-four 18th.
The second 18 was highlighted by Mangrobang birdieing her first and last holes, after starting on hole number one. Santoni picked up three birdies, going +1 on the back nine. Gao had two birdies going even on the front.
“Today we started to show who we can become,” Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said. “With this young of a team, we will have ups and downs, but we are starting to figure it out. I am really happy to see Jena starting to find her game. Jessica has been solid since day one this year and she continues to lead. Francesca is showing immediately that she will be one of our best this year. Diana is growing daily and as she keeps gaining self-belief she is going to be a big part of our success.”
The Zags are in 16th place at +20. Colorado leads the field by nine strokes at 18-under and the Buffs’ Kirsty Hodgkins is the leader by two strokes at -9. Mangrobang is 16th in the field at -1 on the par-five holes.
The tournament wraps up tomorrow with the final 18 holes starting at 7:45 am with another shotgun start. Live links are available at GoZags.com.
