Aug. 24, 2017
ORTING, Wash. - Gonzaga women’s golf assistant coach and former three-time All-WCC selection Victoria Fallgren kept her great summer going by taking second in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Qualifier at High Cedars Golf Club in Orting, WA on Thursday. She won the Washington State Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship in June at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash.
She finished the single-round event two-over par (74), beating third place by four strokes and just four strokes behind the winner. The course was playing at 6053 yards and par-72. The top three finishers advanced.
She opened her round with a birdie on the par-three second and was one-over through the first nine. She birdied the par-three 13th and par-four 15th to go plus-one on the back as well. She was one-under on the par-three holes and had 11 pars on the day.
She just completed her fourth season as an assistant at GU after a stellar career where she became the first Bulldog to win the West Coast Conference title in 2012 and led the Zags to four team tournament wins as a senior in 2012-13. Individually, the Lakewood, Calif., native tallied two tournament wins, 10 top-5 finishes, and 18 top-10s throughout her four years. She has also qualifed for the US Women's Amateur Public Links Championship three times and the US Amateur twice. She advanced to match play in the 2010 and 2012 Public Links Championships. The mid-amateur ranks are for those amateurs competing who are 25 or older.
She moves onto play in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Quail Creek Country Club in Naples, FL, October 7-12. This will be her seventh USGA Championship, but first Mid-Am Championship. She previously competed in two women’s amateur championships, three public links championships, and one junior girls amateur championship.
