FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Gonzaga University women's golf team turned in a solid first round but staggered home in the second round Monday at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic hosted by Colorado State University. First-year head coach Brad Rickel saw his team turn in a solid 311 in the first round as three players broke 80, something all failed to do in the afternoon's second round. As a result the Bulldogs find themselves 18th in the 20-team field at 639 after a second-round 328. The University of California holds the lead at 581 for a 9-stroke advantage over the University of Colorado. Freshman Rachel Sibbitt and senior Sarah Sheffield turned in rounds of 76-81 for 157 and a tie for 56th. Lacey Jo Manwaring, another senior, shot 78-84 for 162 over the 6,223-yard, par 72 Ptarmigan Country Club layout to tie for 84th heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes. Mary Mattson of Campbell University is the leader at 142 after rounds of 72-70. She holds a 2-stroke lead over Shannon Yocum of Cal who fired 73-71 for a 144. "Rachel shot a 76 for her first collegiate round of golf," Rickel said of the newcomer from Mill Valley, Calif. "And we got good rounds from Sarah and Lacey Jo. Lacey Jo would have had an even better first round but she struggled over the final four holes."
The afternoon round was a different story as Sibbitt and Sheffield each shot 81 for the best Bulldog rounds. |
