GU Speeds To Varsity Eight Victory At Silver Lake Over Oregon State
April 1, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. – The (RV) Gonzaga Bulldogs had a successful race on the water in their lone home regatta of the spring as they hosted Oregon State at Silver Lake outside of Spokane on Saturday morning in a 2000-meter regatta.
GU opened the day by dedicating their new shell, dedicating it to the seniors of the 2016 class, who recorded the best finish in school history, 16th at the NCAA Championships last year, with several members of that class on hand to do the honors. VIDEO
The Zags picked up three victories to close the day in the varsity eight, and third and fourth varsity eights.
The first race of the day featured the varsity four boats, as OSU jumped out to an early lead in the eight mph cross-tailwind and moderate chop, and they held that lead to a 7:36.78 finish. The Gonzaga “A” boat finished three seconds back with the Gonzaga “B” crew coming in 13 seconds later. Following that was the second varsity eight where again OSU was victorious with a time of 6:45.78, one second ahead of GU in a great battle, as the wind picked up to 13 mph for the remainder of the day.
The GU varsity eight put in a great time in a comeback win with a finish of 6:33.07, their fastest time of the spring, and nine seconds ahead of the Beavers. The Zags’ third varsity eight boat continued that momentum with a 42-second win with a time of 7:07.65, their best of the spring, and the fourth varsity eight ran unopposed with a time of 7:21.76.
“It was a great morning of racing, especially to be able to begin the day by dedicating the “Limitless” shell to the class of 2016,” Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. “Across the board the racing was really competitive. OSU got out to an early lead in the first three races, and even though we pushed back in the first two we couldn’t get back, but our varsity eight crew did what they have been practicing, staying consistent through the middle part of the race to maintain speed to get the victory.”
Next up for the Zags is the Lake Natoma Invitational outside of Sacramento next Saturday, on the same course that will host the WCC Championships on May 13.
