Bulldogs Claim 17th WCC Championship
May 12, 2018

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Gonzaga Bulldogs claimed their fourth-straight and 17th overall West Coast Conference Championship on Saturday on Lake Natoma, sweeping the races for the second-consecutive season.

Tying the conference record with 42 points for the second-straight year, the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four clinched victories to punch Gonzaga’s fifth NCAA Championships appearance.

On Saturday, the varsity four won with a time of 7:41.205, nine seconds faster than Loyola Marymount. The second varsity eight came home at 6:57.080, eight seconds ahead of LMU. The varsity eight finished the sweep at 6:39.526, five seconds ahead of LMU. GU’s second varsity four boat finished second behind LMU at 7:51.1.

“Winning the conference championship has become more of an expectation than a goal,” Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. “Nobody in the program knows what it is like to lose, and everything they earned today is a testament to the hard work they put in.”

Senior Isabelle Belzil was named the WCC Rower of the Year and All-WCC. She is a two-time all-conference selection and the fifth Zag to win rower of the year. For the second-straight year, Alexa Jadallah was named the WCC Coxswain of the Year, the fourth-straight Zag to earn the honor. Freshman Lauren McCallum was the WCC Co-Newcomer of the Year and head coach Glenn Putyrae was named coach of the year for the fourth-straight season and ninth time overall. Lauren English, Lindey English, and Megan Seifert joined Belzil on the All-WCC team, all first-time honorees.

“We felt like we had a lot to prove today,” Belzil said. “It was really exciting to accomplish what we set out to do.”

The Zags will be making their fourth-straight trip to the NCAA Championships, May 25-27, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
