Zags Set To Hit The Water For First Time In 2017
Feb. 15, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women’s rowing team is hitting the water in a competitive setting for the first time in 2017 this Friday and Saturday. They will compete in two scrimmages against Portland at Vancouver Lake, Wash.
The boats will launch from the Vancouver Lake Crew & Vancouver Lake Aquatic Center located at:
The scrimmage against the Pilots will begin at 2 pm on Friday and the Saturday event will commence at 9 am. The 2017 schedule includes these scrimmages and four regattas in the lead up to the WCC Championships back at Lake Natoma, Calif. and the NCAA Championships in Lake Mercer, N.J.
The Zags are pursuing their third-straight West Coast Conference Championship and 16th overall. Since 1997 the Zags have won 15 of the 20 WCC Championships. The Zags finished last season ranked No. 17 in the final CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Poll after finishing a program-best 16th at the 2016 NCAA Championships.
The Zags last competed against Portland in the 2016 West Coast Conference Championships, which the Zags won. Gonzaga beat Portland in all three races, including the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four events.
"This winter has been one of the harshest I can remember so we have had few opportunities to get on the water,” Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. “Fortunately we have been getting a lot of work done indoors. This scrimmage will provide us with a great opportunity to see how effectively we can connect our fitness to the boat in a competitive setting. We have held this scrimmage for a few years now and are grateful to the University of Portland rowing team and the people at VLC (Vancouver Lake Crew) for allowing us this opportunity."
