Annual Row-A-Thon Set For Wednesday In The Hemmingson Center
Oct. 17, 2017

SPOKANE, Wash. - For over 25 years, the Gonzaga men's and women's rowing programs have held the Row-A-Thon, its annual fundraiser and community engagement event. This year's event takes place in the Hemmingson Center on Wednesday, October 18, from 9 am to 3 pm.

“This is a great opportunity for our student athletes and anyone interested in spending some time on the rowing machine to help our team reach our goal of rowing 750,000 meters between 9 am and 3 pm,” Gonzaga women’s rowing head coach Glenn Putyrae said.

"Row-A-Thon has been a rich tradition here with our teams and helps support our pursuit of excellence," GU men's rowing head coach Dan Gehn said. "It's been a great way to engage the Gonzaga and Spokane communities."

In the past years, the teams have rowed in the fieldhouse, rowed for 24 straight hours, taken the rowing machines to the mall downtown, and rowed a million meters.

"What I remember about the Row-A-Thon was the feeling of camaraderie and community, and having all of the men's and women's rowers working together toward the common goal of raising money to buy better, faster boats," former Gonzaga rower and current Faculty Athletics Representative Peggy Sue Loroz said. "The coaches were always changing it up to keep it fresh and maximize its success. The Row-A-Thon has changed over time, but the event remains a significant fundraising effort for the crew teams. As much as Gonzaga rowing has evolved over the years, it's pretty special that GU rowers over the decades have shared this common experience. And the goal is still the same, better, faster boats."

The women’s rowing team plans to raise $30,000 and will donate 100 hours of community service for every $10,000 raised.

The men's team aims to raise $50,000 and will include community service as a component of their fundraising effort as well.

All members of the public are invited and encouraged to participate, and can donate to the cause.

Crowdfunding donation links will be released via the men’s and women’s rowing social media channels in the coming days.
