Women's Soccer Routs Mount Royal in Exhibition

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 9-0 exhibition victory over Mount Royal (Alta.) at Luger Field Friday. It was also the debut of Chris Watkins as the Zags' head coach.

Sophia Viviano and Maddie Kincaid both found the back of the net three times. Viviano added an assist, while Kincaid placed four of her eight shots on frame.

The Bulldogs outshot Mount Royal, 30-4, with 22 shots on goal. GU also had a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Viviano opened the scoring in the fifth minute, with an assist from Jodi Ulkekul. India Jencks headed in a corner kick from Viviano in the eighth minute. Ten minutes later, Kincaid scored a pair of goals in a four minute-span, including a header from a Jencks cross.

Leading 4-0 at halftime, Gonzaga got two goals from Viviano two minutes apart, four minutes into the second half. Kincaid found the net again in the 55th minute, before freshman Maggie Conners and Sam Heilman completed the scoring.

Miah Godek made eight saves for the Cougars. Isabel Jones, Drew Williams, Sarah Swanson and Allison Seifert all shared time in the GU net.

The Bulldogs start the regular season at home against South Dakota next Friday at 7 p.m. Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com.
