Bulldogs Offense Leads The Way In 3-1 Victory Over McNeese St.
Aug. 28, 2009
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University launched a season-high 29 shots en route to posting a 3-1 non-conference victory over McNeese State University at the Gonzaga Soccer Field Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs improved to 2-0-0 on the young season, using three second half goals to earn the victory over the Cowgirls (0-1-1). Sheridan Jones, an All-West Coast Conference preseason team selection, finished with two assists as Lori Conrad, Emma Dolcetti and Sarah Rhodes each notched goals for the Zags.
“Today was a good win for us,” commented head coach Amy Edwards. “We faced a very good keeper that made some great saves throughout the day but we continued to crash the net and came out with another good victory in front of our home crowd.”
The first 45 minutes saw the Bulldogs outshoot MSU 12-1 and hold a 3-0 corner kick advantage but Cowgirl keeper Cassandra Read made six saves in the period to keep GU off the scoreboard.
In the second half however, Gonzaga continued to pressure the McNeese State defense, getting a number of great shots on goal before finally breaking through. Minutes after a Rhodes header attempt sailed just high, Conrad crashed the keeper box on a Jones corner kick headed in the match’s first goal into the right corner at 51:12. Conrad has now connected off a Jones corner kick in both matches so far this season and leads the team with two goals while Jones paces the club with three assists.
Just over seven minutes later, the Zags were at it again as Jones dribbled up the middle and slipped a pass to a streaking Emma Dolcetti. Dolcetti received the pass just inside the right 18 and then beat a charging keeper into the left corner for her first score of the season and opened up a 2-0 lead at the 58:51 mark.
“Those first two goals were executed perfectly,” stated Edwards. “Sheridan was in the middle of both of those and made two great plays to set up Lori and Emma who were both able to finish off the plays for scores.”
After a defensive miscue by the Bulldogs led to MSU goal later in the half but Gonzaga regrouped and again continued to attack on the offensive end. The Zags outshot the Cowgirls 11-0 after allowing the score and later used a goal by Rhodes to seal the victory. Rhodes headed in her first score of the season, finding the back right corner off of a beautiful left footed cross from Catherine Cullen at the 89th minute.
“I thought we played a solid 90 minutes today,” said Edwards. “We got some bad breaks late in the first half by hitting the post twice but we responded well in the second half. I was very happy with all of our player’s efforts today. We again had a number of players contribute and play well on both sides of the ball. We will need to carry over our solid play from these first two match’s into next week’s matchup against a good Washington State team.”
The Zags will host the Cougars at the Gonzaga Soccer Field 3 p.m. Thursday.
