Sept. 8, 2017
CHENEY, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's soccer team fell at Eastern Washington, 2-1, Friday. It was the Zags' first loss of the season, following their best start in program history.
The Eagles (4-3-0) controlled the match, outshooting GU, 17-9. EWU placed seven shots on frame, forcing the Bulldogs' Isabel Jones into five saves. Gonzaga was outshot for the first time this season.
The Zags also trailed for the first time this season when Eastern found the back of the net in the 15th minute. Savannah Hoekstra squeezed a shot to the near post beating Jones. The Eagles' Allison Raniere scored her second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 67th minute.
India Jencks had GU's (4-1-1) first shot on goal in the 83rd minute. She received a cross from Jodi Ulkekul and struck it into the net for her fourth goal of the season. Three minutes later, the Bulldogs had a great chance for an equalizer, but Emily Busselman's one save of the match was huge, ending Gonzaga's opportunity.
The Zags will look to bounce back at Denver Sunday. The Pioneers (3-2-1) have dropped their last two contests. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m. Pacific Time. Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com.
