Waves Ride First Half to Win at Luger Field

SPOKANE, Wash. -- No. 25 Pepperdine proved its ranking with a 5-0 win over Gonzaga women's soccer at Luger Field Sunday.
The Waves (6-3-3, 1-0-1 West Coast Conference) scored a trio of goals in an eight-minute span, beginning with a strike from Hailey Stenberg in the 16th minute. She brought in a header from Christina Settles and kicked it in from 20 yards out.
In the 22nd minute, Danielle Thomas scored her first goal of the season off of a header from Nicole Leggio, who received a pass from Rylee Baisden, in the box. Baisden now has three assists this season. Two minutes later, Settles stole a ball from and struck it from deep over a leaping GU keeper.
Rachael Collins scored on a penalty kick in the 37th minute. It was her first goal of the year. Pepperdine completed the scoring in the 88th minute. Leggio slid the ball into the net off of an assist from Katy Byrne. It was Leggio's fourth goal of the season.
The Zags (4-5-2, 0-2-0 WCC) got three saves from Allison Seifert in the match. Hannah Seabert made two for Pepperdine.
The Waves had an 11-8 edge in shots, placing eight on goal. GU had two shots on frame. The Bulldogs took four corner kicks, while Pepperdine had two. Mari Kneisel led Gonzaga with three shots.
Gonzaga hosts Portland (6-3-3, 0-1-1) Saturday at 6 p.m. The Pilots fell to Loyola Marymount, 3-0, in Portland Sunday. Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com Saturday.
