Ames Posts Another Shutout As Zags Play To Draw

OGDEN, Utah. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team wrapped up its 2008 non-conference schedule with a 0-0 draw against Weber State University Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs played in its third consecutive double overtime match for the first time in school history and to its second straight scoreless tie to take a 5-6-2 overall record into West Coast Conference play. Weber State is now 3-6-2. Gonzaga sophomore keeper Lauren Ames made a career-high 12 saves to post her fifth shutout of the season and the seventh of her career. WSU keeper Rebecca Ritchie made eight saves. The Zags were outshot 23-11 on the afternoon including a 16-3 spurt by the Wildcats in the second period but the defense buckled down and kept a zero on the scoreboard. Play in the second overtime period was held mostly in the Wildcat zone as the pressuring Bulldogs took two corner kicks and three shots-on-goal. The WSU defense held strong though as freshman Courtney Peacock's match-winning attempt in the final minute was turned away by Ritchie to preserve the tie. The Zags held the advantage in corner kicks 8-3 and outshot Weber State 4-2 in the extra sessions. Sophomore Sheridan Jones led the Bulldogs with two shots-on-goal as eight Zags recorded a shot-on-goal in the match. Gonzaga returns home to open WCC play against #3 ranked University of Portland next Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will play their first three conference games at the Gonzaga Soccer Field.
