Oct. 8, 2016
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Allison Wetherington scored a penalty kick with seven seconds remaining in regulation to give Portland a 2-1 victory over Gonzaga women's soccer Saturday.
Wetherington's fourth goal of the season came off of a foul inside the box in the closing seconds. She struck a ball low in the opposite corner of the diving Zags' goalkeeper.
Portland's Kaycie Young started the scoring in the 10th minute. She found the net for the first time this season on a shot on an open net off of a deflection. Hannah Griffiths Boston was credited with the assist.
Callie Best evened the score in the 21st minute. She brought in a pass from Karley Baggerly and slid the ball into the right side of the net. Best's second goal of the season came off of Baggerly's first assist this year.
Sarah Swanson made a pair of impressive saves late in the match, while her counterpart Hanna de Haan had two saves in the match for Portland as well.
The Pilots held a 10-8 advantage in shots, placing four on goal to Gonzaga's three. The Zags took nine corner kicks, compared to Portland's two.
Best and Jodi Ulkekul both took two shots for the Bulldogs. Hope Tsuneyoshi had a header in the 80th minute that de Haan had to make a tough kick save to stop. Gonzaga's Taylor Kernion also had a chance in the 85th minute that went just over the bar.
"I was impressed with our effort tonight," GU Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "I am heartbroken for this team as they deserved to be on the other side of this result. We continue to be challenged each game and we are growing despite the results. Our next step is to bounce back and get prepared for the next game against San Diego."
The Bulldogs travel to San Diego next Saturday for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Toreros. Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com.
