Zags Break Goal Record in Setback to Santa Clara
Oct. 8, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's soccer team broke the program's single-season goal record in a 2-1 loss to Santa Clara Sunday.
It was the first loss at home for the Zags this season. Callie Best's penalty kick goal in the 70th minute was the Bulldogs' 35th of the season, snapping the previous records set in 1997 and 1999. GU is one assist away from equaling the record for most assists in a single season.
Santa Clara (8-6-1, 3-1-0 West Coast Conference) won its third straight game, despite being outshot, 11-8. Gonzaga placed six shots on frame, while SCU had five.
The Broncos' Delaney Baie Pridham scored her second goal of the season in the 38th minute. She headed in a corner kick from Julie Doyle. Doyle found the back of the net in the 57th minute. She brought in a pass from Alex Loera, took a few dribbles and struck the ball to the far post.
Best's goal was her fifth of the season. Best and India Jencks both took three shots, with two on goal each. Isabel Jones had three saves in the GU (10-3-1, 2-2-0 WCC) net. Melissa Lowder made four stops for Santa Clara.
Gonzaga travels to No. 18 Pepperdine next Sunday. The Waves (9-2-2, 3-0-0) won their fifth straight match, 1-0, at Loyola Marymount Sunday. Pepperdine is unbeaten in its last seven games, with one draw. Live video and stats from next Sunday's match will be available on GoZags.com.
