Women's Soccer Defeats Montana in OT, 3-2
Oct. 10, 2003 SPOKANE, Wash. - Junior Annie Hawkins scored her second goal of the game in the 102nd minute of play to lead Gonzaga University over University of Montana, 3-2, in a double overtime match. The victory extends Gonzaga's five game win streak, and ends the 12 match series win streak by Montana. Hawkins scored the first and last goal of the match, starting with her first goal in the 47th minute of play to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead after a scoreless first half. Hawkins, a Salt Lake City, Utah, native, scored off a cross from junior Walker Loseno for her ninth goal of the season. Loseno tallied her fifth assist. Junior Natalie Hardin gave Gonzaga a two goal advantage as she scored her second goal in two consecutive games off the rebound of a block by Grizzly goalkeeper Sarah Braseth in the 61st minute. Montana's Lily Coble narrowed the two-goal margin with her goal over the head of Bulldog goalkeeper Brooke Longacre. Coble received the ball off a Gonzaga team block in the 71st minute. The Grizzlies evened up the score with a game-tying goal by Lindsay Winans in the 85th minute to send the game into overtime. Winans managed to find the ball after a congregation of players gathered in the middle of the goal box, sneaking it past Bulldog Longacre.
Gonzaga went into its first overtime match of the season without scoring in the first period of overtime. Hawkins scored her tenth goal in 12 games in the second minute of double overtime. Ashley Pryor's shot just seconds before hit the crossbar, sending the rebound shot to Hawkins. Hawkins put the ball in the net past goalkeeper Amy Gibson to end the sudden death overtime play and give the Bulldogs their fifth consecutive win.
Bulldog keepers Ashley Haugen and Brooke Longacre split time between the posts, combining for six saves, while Grizzly goalkeepers Sarah Braseth and Amy Gibson combined for five. Gonzaga outshot Montana, 16-9. The Bulldogs return to action when they travel to play the defending national champions, University of Portland, on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 12 p.m. |
