SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- San Diego scored a goal late in the first half, and then held off some scoring chances by Gonzaga women's soccer to pick up a 1-0 victory Saturday.

San Diego's (8-6-1, 3-2-0 West Coast Conference) Julia Sherwood headed in the game-winning goal two minutes before halftime. Her fourth goal of the season came off a double assist from Summer Mason and Rachel Conners. Conners kicked a ball into the box, where Mason headed it to Sherwood, who then finished the scoring play.

The Zags has six shots in the second half, including three in the final five minutes, but couldn't find the equalizer. Taylor Kernion had a shot hit the post in the 12th minute.

"Tremendous spirit and effort by our team tonight," GU Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "Taylor had the chance off the post early in the game, but we just haven't gotten these very close opportunities to fall for us lately. In the second half, we battled to get chances and again could not get the tying goal to fall. I continue to be impressed with our effort and quality chances."

Gonzaga (4-7-2, 0-4-0 WCC) finished with nine shots in the match, with three on goal. Kristin Standish's two shots in the contest were both on frame. The Toreros took 10 shots, with two on goal. The Bulldogs had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Amber Michel made three saves for USD. Sarah Swanson had one save in the Gonzaga net.

The Zags return to Spokane for their final two home matches of the season. GU hosts Saint Mary's (2-11-2, 0-4-0) Friday at 6 p.m., before welcoming Pacific (1-9-1, 1-2-0) for Senior Day on Oct. 23.
