Zags Outlast SMC for First Conference Win

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's soccer team picked up their first West Coast Conference win of the season, 2-1, over Saint Mary's Friday.

The Zags (5-7-2, 1-4-0 West Coast Conference) remained unbeaten this season when leading at halftime (5-0-2) and when scoring first (5-0-2). GU has also won three of the last four meetings with SMC, with a 1-1 draw coming last season in Moraga.

Gonzaga's Taylor Kernion found the back of the net for the second time this season in the 10th minute. The freshman brilliantly struck a loose ball to the far post, past the outstretched the Gaels' goalkeeper.

Mari Kneisel put the Bulldogs up 2-0 in the 60th minute. The junior scored her second goal of the season off of an assist from Karley Baggerly. Baggerly slid a pass through the defense for her second assist of the season, and 11th of her career. She moves into fifth all-time at GU with 11 assists and remains third with 57 points.

In the 76th minute, the Gaels' (2-12-2, 0-5-0 WCC) Samantha Dion recorded her third goal of the season. She headed in a corner kick from Hannah Diaz. SMC took six corner kicks to Gonzaga's five.

The Zags had an 11-10 edge in shots, but Saint Mary's had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Sarah Swanson made four saves for GU, while SMC's Julia McDonald had two.

The Bulldogs' Jodi Ulkekul took a match-high five shots, while Diaz had four.

Gonzaga hosts Pacific (1-11-1, 1-4-0) on Senior Day Sunday at 1 p.m. The Tigers fell at Portland, 2-0, Friday. Live video and stats will be available on Sunday. GU will honor nine seniors prior to the match.
