Ames and Bulldog Defense Post Another Shutout

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Gonzaga University women’s soccer team posted a 1-0 West Coast Conference victory over the University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon. Junior Lori Conrad scored her first goal of the season and sophomore keeper Lauren Ames made two saves to record her sixth shutout of the season and eighth in her career. The Bulldogs improved to 7-9-2 overall and 2-3-0 in the WCC with the win despite being outshot 8-6 by USF (5-11-2, 0-5-0 WCC). Gonzaga played another solid game, coming off a very back and forth 4-3 overtime win at Saint Mary’s on Friday, the Bulldogs played well in every facet of the game to leave the bay area with a 2-0 record. After withstanding a few early offensive threats by USF, Gonzaga got on the board following a couple a couple offensive pressures of their own. The Zags pressures in the USF zone earned them a corner kick after a shot by sophomore Sheridan Jones was turned away by the Don Defense resulting in a GU corner kick. Jones took the kick and found Conrad who had won the battle for position within the box and headed a shot into right upper “V” for the eventual match-winner. Jones earned her team-leading eighth point of the season with her second assist of the season. The Zags produced a solid defensive effort throughout he match but really buckled down in the second half as USF produced a 3-1 shot advantage in the second half. Ames turned away two shots in the match and the rest of the defense also backed Ames with three “team saves” on the afternoon. The six shutouts posted by Ames this season tie her for the third most in Gonzaga’s single season record book. The Bulldogs close out their home schedule Friday against the University of San Diego at 11:30 a.m. Prior to Friday’s match the Zags will honor seniors Lacey Castleberry, Lauren Dascenzo and team captain Kelcey Goddard.
