Women’s Soccer Spring Update
April 6, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women’s soccer team continued its Spring season with two more wins earlier against Northwest Nazarene and Boise State Saturday. BSU hosted the event and all games were played at the Boas Soccer Complex.
Gonzaga won its opening match 1-0 over a talented NNU side. The Zags had several opportunities to score, however, only one found the back of the net. The game winner came from a foul committed by NNU during a Gonzaga corner kick resulting in a penalty kick. Tia Beck stepped to the penalty mark and buried her shot.
Due to travel issues and long delays, the Zags had to move their original start time with Boise from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m., directly following their match against NNU. Boise State returned nine starters from the fall and looked very strong. They were dangerous during the first 20 minutes of the first half. After Gonzaga’s slow start they started to piece together several passing strings. In the 27th minute of the match, Sam Heilman received the ball deep in the attacking half. She took her defender on and crossed the ball just outside of the near post forcing Boise State’s goalkeeper to make a save. India Jencks was in the right spot to put the Zags’ up 1-0.
Both goals are both players’ first collegiate goals … The Zags move to 2 wins, 1 tie and 0 losses in the spring ... This is also the third game the Zags haven’t allowed a goal … They’ve started their spring campaign strong and look to continue at Oregon on April 14.
