July 6, 2016
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Several Gonzaga women's soccer student-athletes are playing on team's around the region this summer. Below is an update on those in action.
Spokane Shadow (Northwest Premier League)
The NWPL is an elite, amateur, highly competitive women’s soccer league for players, coaches, families and fans around the state of Washington to come together through the sport of soccer. Players and coaches can enhance their skills in the NWPL during the summer break from college.
A quartet of Zags has guided the Shadow to the top of the league standings through eight games. Spokane has won seven of its first eight contests and has outscored opponents 54-9. Karley Baggerly, Callie Best, Lauren Luke and Sarah Swanson are on the roster and have made an impact to the team’s success. Baggerly has a trio of goals this season, while Swanson has made starts in the net.
South Sound FC (Northwest Premier League)
Sarah Carter and McKenna Ferrera are on the South Sound FC out of Tacoma. SSFC is the only team that has beaten Spokane this season. South Sound has yet to lose a match through nine outings and sits tied atop the league standing with the Shadow. Ferrera scored her first goal of the season in the Shock’s last game, a 3-0 win over the Olympic Force. Carter is joining the team after studying abroad in Europe.
The inaugural NWPL title seems to be a two-team race between Spokane and South Sound. The Shadow has four games left on their schedule, while SSFC has three. The regular season wraps up with a clash between the teams on July 30.
Crossfire United Diamonds (Women’s Premier Soccer League)
Maddie Kincaid and Ariana Pumpelly are members of the Crossfire United Diamonds in Portland, Ore. Through six games, the Diamonds are unbeaten.
