THIS WEEK: Gonzaga University's women's soccer team opens its 2008 season with two matches this weekend. The Bulldogs hit the road to face Long Beach State University Friday at 1 p.m and return home for the inaugural game at the new Gonzaga Soccer Field, hosting Portland State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

ABOUT THE LONG BEACH STATE 49ERS: Long Beach State University posted a 13-7 overall record in 2007 including a 6-2 mark in the Big West Conference to finish the regular season as co-champions. The 49ers return 21 letterwinners from a year ago and lead the series with the Zags 1-0 after beating the GU 1-0 in Spokane in 2005. Mauricio Ingrassia is in his fifth season as head coach and owns a 45-26-7 record at the school.

ABOUT THE PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS: Portland State University opens its season at Oregon State Friday before facing off with the Zags on Sunday. The Vikings return 16 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 7-10-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Big Sky Conference. GU has won the past three meetings with PSU, including a 1-0 win in Spokane in 2005 and currently leads the all-time series 7-2-2. Head coach Laura Schott begins her first year at the helm of the Portland State program.

LAST SEASON: The Bulldogs produced their fifth consecutive 10-plus win season, finishing the year with a 12-7-1 overall record and 3-4 in West Coast Conference. The 12 wins tied the school-record set by the 2005 squad. GU also produced a school-record eight-game unbeaten stretch in which the Bulldogs went 7-0-1.

INCOMING CLASS: Gonzaga's 2008 seven-member incoming class was ranked among the top recruiting classes in the West Region, according to Soccer Buzz Magazine. Heading the class is three-time All-Provincial team member in Sarah Rhodes from British Columbia and All-Colorado first team selection Ashley Railey. The Bulldogs also welcome junior college transfer Amy Danielson, another top recruit from Canada in Emma Dolcetti, also; Casey Gould from Everett, Wash., Corey Protzman from Los Alamitos, Calif., and Caitlyn Salo from Bainbridge Island, Wash.

SEASON OPENERS: The Zags are 4-13 all-time in season openers and 4-5 under head coach Shannon Stiles. GU has won four of its last five openers with all four wins coming while opening on the road. Last season, the Bulldogs dropped a 2-0 decision to the University of Idaho in Spokane.

2008 SCHEDULE: This year's schedule features five matches against teams that made a 2007 NCAA Tournament appearance and a total of 10 home matches that will be played at the new Gonzaga Soccer Field. The Zags will face University of Denver, University of Colorado, Santa Clara University, University of San Diego and the University of Portland who all participated in last season's NCAA Tournament. Colorado advanced to the second round and Portland played into the elite eight.

SIX BULLDOGS EARN ALL-WCC HONORS IN 2007: Six players earned All-West Coast Conference accolades last season. Current senior midfielder Kelcey Goddard was placed on the All-WCC second team and sophomore keeper Lauren Ames earned a spot on last year's All-Freshman team. The Zags had four seniors receive All-WCC honorable mention, Sarah Hall, Nanda McCormick, Christine Soma and Lauren Zuckerman. The six selections were the second highest number of honors in a single season for the Bulldogs. In 2005, the Zags landed seven all-conference selections.
