THIS WEEK: Gonzaga University begins a new era in its women's soccer program Sunday as new head coach Amy Edwards and the Zags open 2009 hosting Montana at the Gonzaga Soccer Field. This year's squad is made up of three All-West Coast Conference performers and 10 players that made at least 13 starts last season. The Zags open the 2009 campaign with a match against the University of Montana this Sunday.

LAST SEASON: Gonzaga University posted a 7-10-3 overall record last season including a 2-4-1 mark in West Coast Conference play. The Bulldogs played in a school record five double overtime matches, tied the school record with six overtime matches and faced seven opponents that went on to earn spots in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

ABOUT THE MONTANA GRIZZLIES: The University of Montana returns 12 letterwinners from last year's team that posted a 6-11-2 overall record and finished tied for fourth in the Big Sky Conference. Gonzaga University has won the six meetings with the Grizzlies including a 1-0 victory in Spokane last season. Junior Kaitlyn Heinsohn returns after leading UM in goals (5) and points (12) season ago. Head coach Neil Sedgwick is in his sixth year at Montana and owns a 30-52-9 record at the school.

THE 2009 SCHEDULE: Gonzaga University is slated to match up with six teams that made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament a year ago along with playing four of its seven West Coast Conference matches on the road in 2009. Also on the Zags schedule are six teams that appear in the 2009 preseason national rankings including three teams that appear in the top-10.

TRIO OF ZAGS EARNED ALL-WCC HONORS IN 2008 : Three Gonzaga University women's soccer players earned All-West Coast Conference honors last season. Sheridan Jones was named to the All-WCC first team, Lori Conrad and Courtney Peacock each received honorable mention and Peacock also earned a spot on the All-WCC freshman team.

A FIRST FOR FIVE ZAGS IN 2008: Christi D'Agostino, Katie Spangenberg, Sarah Rhodes, Courtney Peacock and Caitlyn Salo were the five Gonzaga University players who recorded their first career goals last season. D'Agostino was the first to notch her first career netter, knocking in lone goal of the Zags 1-0 victory over Portland State University. Spangenberg picked up her goal against the University of Washington and Rhodes earned her first career score in the 1-0 win over the University of Montana. Peacock's first career goal was part of a two-goal performance that saw her score the match-winner in double overtime to beat Saint Mary's College. Salo's score came against the University of San Diego in Bulldogs final home match of the season.
